Right now, it’s still legal under Michigan law to fire someone or evict them based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

But bipartisan legislation and an upcoming ballot initiative are going to force action from lawmakers, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, two Democratic lawmakers sponsoring bills to change the law and advocates said during a Monday morning news conference.

“The vaccine for discrimination is legislation. We’re going to administer it so that our state can build back better for all Michiganders,” Whitmer said during the event.

“We’ll continue taking steps forward and pass laws to protect our LGBTQ brothers and sisters because it’s the right thing to do — because it isn’t just good for our people, it’s good for our economy and will help us lure talent in from all over the world. In 2021, it’s time for us to finally get Michigan on the right side of history.”
