Asheville City Schools could start school a week earlier than planned.

During the June 7 Asheville City Board of Education meeting, ACS Executive Director of Communications Ashley-Michelle Thublin shared the results of a survey sent last week to ACS parents, staff and students about changing the first day of school from Aug. 23 to Aug. 16.

“Aug. 16 was the preferred start date overall, yielding 58.1% of responses,” Thublin said. “Our parents were preferring that earlier start date, and our staff were preferring that later start date.”

The district received 923 responses, mostly from parents, Thublin said. Some left comments in the survey justifying their selection.

About 55% of the 208 staff members who responded preferred keeping the first day of school Aug. 23, while about 62% of the 679 parents preferred moving it to Aug. 16.
